The Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa: Our Firsthand Guide to Jackson Hole's Most Charming Luxury Retreat

There are luxury hotels that impress you with their size. And then there are places like The Rusty Parrot Lodge & Spa—where exceptional service, thoughtful design, and genuine hospitality leave the biggest impression.

During a Small Luxury Hotels of the World familiarization trip to Jackson Hole, I spent several days experiencing the property firsthand while exploring Grand Teton National Park and everything the destination has to offer. If you're looking for a luxury lodge that feels intimate, authentic, and perfectly positioned for adventure, this is one to have on your radar.

Red Letter Travel explores the Rusty Parrot Lodge.

Why We Love The Rusty Parrot

The Rusty Parrot isn't trying to be the biggest hotel in Jackson—it intentionally stays small, with just 38 guest rooms and two suites, creating a boutique atmosphere where the staff quickly knows your name. It's family-owned, a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World, and has the kind of warm, personalized service that's becoming increasingly rare.

Inside, every room feels like an elevated mountain retreat with fireplaces and sophisticated Western-inspired décor. The atmosphere strikes the perfect balance between rustic Wyoming charm and refined luxury.

This is an ideal property for:

  • Couples looking for a romantic getaway

  • Adventure travelers who appreciate boutique luxury

  • Empty nesters

  • Families with toddlers or older teenagers (16+) who don't need connecting rooms

The Location: Close to Everything

One of the biggest surprises is just how convenient Jackson Hole is.

  • Jackson Hole Airport is only about 15 minutes from town

  • The Rusty Parrot sits within easy reach of Jackson's restaurants, galleries, and shopping

  • Grand Teton National Park is an easy day trip

  • Jackson Hole Mountain Resort is approximately 20 minutes away for skiing

The hotel operates a scheduled ski shuttle throughout the winter, and ski valet service can also be arranged, making it a wonderful option for travelers who prefer staying in town instead of directly in Teton Village.

Wildlife Encounters You'll Never Forget

If there is one experience I would tell every visitor to prioritize, it's a professionally guided wildlife safari.

Our guide, Aiden from Jackson Hole Wildlife Safaris, reminded us:

"It's not about what you didn't see or do—it's about what you did see and do."

That perfectly captures Jackson Hole.

Rather than rushing from attraction to attraction, the destination encourages slowing down and appreciating each wildlife encounter. Depending on the season, you may spot:

  • Moose

  • Elk

  • Bison

  • Bald eagles

  • Bears

  • Wolves

May is especially rewarding, with excellent wildlife viewing, elk shedding their antlers, and the start of rodeo season and local events.

Explore Grand Teton National Park

One of my favorite days included exploring Grand Teton National Park.

Highlights included:

  • Hiking around beautiful Jenny Lake

  • Taking the optional boat across the lake before the hike

  • Lunch at Dornan's overlooking the Tetons

  • Incredible mountain scenery around every turn

Jenny Lake offers one of the most accessible hikes in the park while still delivering iconic Wyoming views.

Don't Skip Snow King Mountain

While Jackson Hole Mountain Resort gets most of the attention, Snow King Mountain turned out to be one of the destination's hidden gems.

Snow King Mountain lift to the top of the mountain.

The gondola carries guests to:

  • Snow King Observatory

  • Planetarium

  • Aurora Restaurant & Bar

  • Outdoor concert venue

  • Incredible panoramic views over Jackson

Even if you're not skiing, it's absolutely worth visiting. Gondola tickets are affordable, reservations are recommended, and the observatory is one of the newest attractions in town.

Our Favorite Restaurants

One thing that surprised me was just how strong Jackson's dining scene is.

Some standouts include:

  • Wild Sage (located at the Rusty Parrot)

  • Local Restaurant & Bar

  • Glorietta Trattoria

  • King Sushi

  • Café Genevieve

  • Persephone Bakery for breakfast or coffee

During our stay, Wild Sage consistently impressed with elevated Rocky Mountain cuisine and warm hospitality that perfectly matched the hotel's atmosphere.

Shopping Worth Exploring

Downtown Jackson is much more than souvenir shops.

A few favorites include:

  • JW Bennett for custom cowboy hats

  • Made for locally crafted gifts and home décor

  • Womenfolk Vintage for upscale consignment shopping

  • Altitude for outdoor gear

  • Penny Lane for boutique shopping
