CMH Bobbie Burns Lodge Review: One of Canada's Greatest Adventure Experiences
Luxury isn't always about marble bathrooms and thread counts. Sometimes, it's about standing 1,000 meters above the ground, clipped into a mountainside, with nothing but glaciers and endless peaks surrounding you.
When most people think of luxury travel, they imagine overwater villas or five-star city hotels. But every now and then, a trip reminds you that luxury can also be measured in experiences.
My stay at CMH Bobbie Burns Lodge was exactly that.
This wasn't a relaxing resort vacation—it was four unforgettable days of helicopters, mountain summits, incredible guides, communal dinners, and adventures that pushed me far outside my comfort zone. I left tired, sore, incredibly proud of myself, and already thinking about when I could return.
If your idea of the perfect vacation is collecting experiences rather than room upgrades, this deserves a spot on your bucket list.
Getting There
My journey began with a flight into Calgary, where I spent the night at the Marriott Airport Hotel. This is the option I'd recommend since the CMH shuttle departs from the airport around 5:00 AM.
The bus makes several stops—including Banff—before arriving at the CMH heliport.
After a helicopter safety briefing, we loaded into our aircraft.
Within minutes we were flying deep into the Canadian Rockies.
The helicopter ride alone is worth the trip.
Towering mountain ranges stretch endlessly beneath you, and before long, Bobbie Burns Lodge appears tucked away in the wilderness—accessible only by helicopter.
First Impressions
Upon arrival, everyone heads directly to one of the most underrated parts of the entire experience:
The Gear Room.
Each guest is assigned a personal locker and fitted with everything needed for the week, including:
Hiking boots
Rain gear
Helmets
Climbing gloves
Hiking poles
Safety equipment
Even better, it's all high-quality gear from brands like Patagonia.
This is a huge advantage for travelers.
Whether you're flying internationally or combining this with Banff, you don't need to dedicate half your suitcase to hiking equipment. CMH has already done that for you.
After settling into our rooms, we enjoyed lunch before heading out for our very first hike.
Every afternoon begins the same way:
Load into the helicopter.
Fly into spectacular alpine terrain.
Land somewhere that very few people will ever experience.
Then start hiking.
Every Day Begins With a Helicopter Ride
This is what makes CMH so unique.
Every morning your hiking group boards a helicopter that flies you directly to your trailhead.
No long drives.
No crowded parking lots.
No busy trailheads.
Just mountains.
Each day guests can choose from multiple hiking options ranging from leisurely scenic hikes to challenging climbs and world-famous via ferratas.
That flexibility is one of CMH's biggest strengths.
Families or groups with different fitness levels can each choose an adventure that's appropriate for them before reuniting back at the lodge that evening.
You never feel forced into something beyond your comfort level—but if you're looking for a challenge, there are plenty waiting.
Conquering Mount Nimbus
Day two brought what many guests come here specifically to experience.
The Mount Nimbus Via Ferrata.
It is the highest and longest via ferrata in North America, featuring:
Steel ladders fixed directly into the mountain
Continuous safety cables
A spectacular 60-meter suspension bridge
Nearly 1,000 meters of exposure beneath your feet
I'll admit...
I was nervous.
This was my very first via ferrata.
Within minutes, those nerves turned into excitement.
Every step upward revealed another breathtaking panorama.
The higher we climbed, the more surreal everything became.
There was no cell service.
No crowds.
No traffic noise.
Just mountains stretching in every direction.
Standing at the summit—and later hanging over the edge during the final platform section—was one of the most exhilarating moments I've ever experienced.
After a full day of climbing, we returned to the lodge for what felt like the perfect reward:
A gourmet dinner, a well-earned glass of wine, and stories shared with new friends around the communal dining tables.
More Than Just Mountain Hiking
By day three, my legs were definitely feeling yesterday's climb.
Fortunately, breakfast was outstanding.
One thing that really impressed me throughout the week was how well the kitchen handled dietary restrictions.
As someone eating gluten-free, fresh gluten-free bread appeared at my seat every morning without me ever having to ask.
Packed trail lunches were also clearly organized for guests with dietary needs.
It's a small detail—but one that makes a big difference.
Our hike that day felt less like climbing and more like an adult playground.
We:
Crossed rushing rivers
Ziplined over waterfalls
Balanced across suspension features
Finished with an icy alpine plunge in crystal-clear water
It was challenging enough to feel accomplished but playful enough that everyone spent most of the day laughing.
The People Make the Experience
One thing I wasn't expecting was just how social the experience would be.
Breakfast and dinner are served at long communal tables.
Each day's hiking groups naturally mix guests together.
By the second day everyone knew each other's names.
As a solo traveler, I absolutely loved this.
Some evenings we'd gather in the bar area sharing photos from the day's adventures.
Other nights we'd simply swap travel stories over dinner.
What surprised me most? Many guests were repeat visitors.
Even more impressive, several had originally met during previous CMH trips and now returned together every year.
That says a lot about the community CMH has created.
The Guides Were Incredible
The guides deserve special recognition.
Some have spent more than 40 years guiding both hikers and skiers throughout these mountains.
Their experience shows immediately.
Every hike became part adventure and part storytelling.
They knew every peak, every glacier, every wildlife corridor, and had decades' worth of incredible mountain stories to share.
More importantly, they created an environment where everyone—from first-time hikers to experienced climbers—felt safe and encouraged.
The Lodge
If you're expecting ultra-luxury accommodations, this probably isn't the right trip.
The rooms are comfortable but fairly simple, with limited room categories.
My recommendation? Book a room overlooking the lawn if possible. Watching the helicopters constantly arrive and depart became one of my favorite parts of each day.
The lodge also offers:

Anyone looking for a traditional luxury resort vacation
Consider the Lodge-to-Lodge Experience
I chose the four-night stay to experience Bobbie Burns, but CMH also offers one of their most popular itineraries: the Bobbie Burns to Bugaboos Lodge-to-Lodge Adventure.
Over six days, guests split their time between two remote helicopter-access lodges, exploring completely different mountain landscapes while their luggage is transferred ahead for them.
It's an incredible option for travelers who want to experience even more of the Canadian Rockies without sacrificing comfort or logistics.
If I return—and I fully intend to—I would absolutely choose this itinerary.
Final Thoughts
CMH may be best known for its legendary heli-skiing, and you can certainly feel that heritage throughout the operation.
But their summer adventure program deserves just as much attention.
This trip challenged me physically, introduced me to incredible people, and helped me conquer fears I wasn't sure I could overcome.
I arrived excited.
I left hooked on via ferratas.
For travelers who value stories over souvenirs, experiences over excess, and mountains over cities, Bobbie Burns Lodge delivers something increasingly rare:
A genuine adventure you'll still be talking about years later.
And for me?
I already can't wait for the next via ferrata.
