Hawai‘i, Reimagined: A Hotel-Led Journey Through O‘ahu & The Big Island

There’s something about Hawai‘i that feels both deeply familiar and entirely new each time you return.

This trip was a little different for me—less about chasing a packed itinerary and more about experiencing place through where you stay. Partnering with Marriott International, I had the opportunity to explore a curated collection of properties across O‘ahu and the Island of Hawai‘i (the Big Island), and it reminded me just how much a hotel can shape not just your stay—but your entire connection to a destination.

Because in Hawai‘i, where you wake up, what you see from your lanai, and how you move through your days… it all matters.

O‘ahu: Energy, Iconic Coastlines & So Many Ways to Stay Waikīkī

O‘ahu is often a first introduction to Hawai‘i—and for good reason. There’s an undeniable energy here. From the buzz of Waikīkī to the untamed beauty of the North Shore, it’s an island that offers contrast in the best way.

And when it comes to where to stay… the options can feel overwhelming. But what I loved most about this experience was seeing just how different each property feels—despite sharing the same iconic stretch of coastline.

If you want to be in the center of it all, Waikīkī delivers. Think golden beaches, world-class shopping, and that effortless blend of city-meets-ocean.

  • For something lively, polished, and incredibly family-friendly, the Sheraton Waikiki stands out—with its sweeping oceanfront infinity pool (one of the best views on the island) and endless programming for kids.

  • Just next door, the Royal Hawaiian offers a completely different pace. Historic, romantic, and quietly glamorous, it feels tucked away despite being in the heart of Waikīkī—perfect for honeymooners or anyone craving a more refined, story-filled stay.

  • The Moana Surfrider blends those two worlds beautifully: timeless charm with modern beachfront luxury. There’s something special about staying somewhere that feels like part of Hawai‘i’s history while still delivering everything today’s traveler wants.

  • And for clients who prioritize space and flexibility, The Ritz-Carlton Residences offer a residential-style experience—think full kitchens, expansive layouts, and sweeping ocean views—ideal for longer stays or families traveling together.

  • On the quieter edge of Waikīkī, the Waikiki Marriott Beach Resort gives you a bit more breathing room, with unobstructed views of Diamond Head and a more relaxed, spacious feel.

But what surprised me most?

Just how easy it is to escape Waikīkī without ever leaving O‘ahu.

Up on the North Shore, The Ritz-Carlton O‘ahu, Turtle Bay feels like a different island entirely. Set on its own peninsula, it’s peaceful, expansive, and deeply connected to nature. Days here are slower—morning bike rides along the coast, kayaking with sea turtles, sunsets that feel uninterrupted. It’s the kind of place you go when you want Hawai‘i to feel a little more personal, a little more grounded.

The Island of Hawai‘i: Wild Beauty & Space to Breathe

If O‘ahu is vibrant and energetic, the Big Island is expansive and elemental.

This is where you come to feel the raw power of Hawai‘i—black lava fields, dramatic coastlines, and landscapes that shift with every mile. It’s quieter, more spread out, and perfect for travelers who want to slow down and sink into their surroundings.

And again, where you stay defines your experience.

On the Kohala Coast, I explored a handful of properties that each offer something distinct:

  • The Waikoloa Beach Marriott is an easy, relaxed choice—recently refreshed, walkable, and ideal for travelers who want a laid-back stay with access to shops, dining, and beautiful coastal paths.

  • For something more iconic, the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel is truly special. There’s a sense of history here that you can feel—from its mid-century design to its incredible art collection—and the setting on Kauna‘oa Bay is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island. It’s understated luxury at its best.

  • And for those drawn to wellness and wide-open space, the Westin Hapuna offers a serene, modern escape. Large rooms, uncrowded beaches, and a focus on well-being make it an easy favorite for longer stays or families looking to truly unwind.

And a tip to make your time on the Kohala Coast even more unforgettable?

Swimming with manta rays just offshore from Mauna Kea Beach—an experience that feels equal parts surreal and grounding. It’s a reminder that the Big Island isn’t just somewhere you visit… it’s something you experience.

Why This Trip Felt Different

Dani Crowley, a Red Letter Travel advisor, explores some of Hawaii's best resorts.

What this journey reinforced for me is something I talk about often with clients:

There is no “one-size-fits-all” Hawai‘i.

The right hotel doesn’t just check boxes—it sets the tone for your entire trip. It determines whether your mornings are slow or active, whether your afternoons are spent poolside or exploring, whether your evenings feel lively or quiet and restorative.

And when you pair the right property with thoughtful planning? That’s when a trip becomes something more.

Looking Ahead

Hawai‘i is one of those destinations people return to again and again—but each trip can (and should) feel completely different.

Whether you’re dreaming of your first visit to Waikīkī, a family escape with space to spread out, or a slower, more intentional stay on the Big Island… there’s a version of Hawai‘i waiting for you.

And now is the time to start thinking about it—especially for 2026 and 2027 travel. The best rooms, the best views, and the most meaningful experiences are always the ones planned ahead!

If Hawai‘i has been on your list, consider this your sign!
