The Caribbean Welcomes Its First Ocean Pool: A New Luxury Experience at Wymara Resort + Villas
Why settle for either a swim in the ocean or a dip in the pool when you can experience both? While infinity pools offer the illusion of merging with the sea, ocean pools deliver the real thing. Although common in Australia and select European destinations like Madeira, Portugal, the Caribbean has been notably missing this unique feature—until recently.
Wymara Resort + Villas, a luxury establishment located on Grace Bay Beach in Turks and Caicos, has unveiled what it claims to be the Caribbean's inaugural ocean pool. Spanning 3,900 square feet, this engineering marvel is 130 feet long and 30 feet wide. Nestled in the palm-lined Sunset Cove, the ocean pool is surrounded by powdery white sand and the turquoise waters of the Atlantic.
The ocean pool is part of Wymara's Villa Beach Club and is accessible to both villa and resort guests—the latter for a daily fee of $75 per person. What sets this pool apart is its natural replenishment with seawater, creating varying depths that change with the tides. With a sandy bottom throughout, the pool reaches its zenith of beauty during high tide, blending seamlessly with the ocean.
Bruce Maclaren, the resort owner who spent two decades in Australia where ocean pools date back to the 19th century, is the visionary behind this project. Over 1,500 tons of rock were excavated to construct the pool, allowing for calm saltwater laps. A wooden deck surrounds the pool, providing a tranquil lounging area where guests can sunbathe while enjoying a cocktail.
As for additional amenities, Wymara Resort + Villas also boasts 91 studios and suites, a 7,000-square-foot infinity pool, and an array of dining and spa options. Soon, Maclaren plans to augment the ocean pool with a beachside restaurant and additional day passes.
