Global Entry Is About to Go Up in Price for the First Time

Important Update: Adjustments in Global Entry Fee Structure Announced

Adjustments in Global Entry Fee Structure Announced

For the first time since its inception, the Trusted Traveler Program, introduced in 2008 to streamline the customs process for travelers entering the United States from international destinations, is undergoing a fee adjustment. As Global Entry has significantly eased the journey home for millions, it’s crucial for current members and prospective applicants to note these changes.

If your Global Entry membership is nearing its expiration, or if you've been contemplating joining, now is a pivotal moment. Starting from October 1, 2024, the enrollment cost for Global Entry will rise to $120, up from its longstanding fee of $100, as announced by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). This adjustment isn't isolated to Global Entry; Nexus and SENTRI, facilitating expedited entries from Canada and Mexico respectively, will also see their fees align at $120, departing from their previous costs of $50 and a variable fee model.

Global Entry's appeal has surged post-pandemic, growing from 5 million members in April 2018 to over 12 million by September 2023, with a record 3.2 million applications in 2023 alone. This demand spike, combined with operational pauses during the pandemic, extended wait times significantly. However, with the fee increment, Global Entry aims to bolster its capacity, potentially reducing wait times by expanding its workforce.

The updated fee structure brings welcome news for families: minors under 18 can now enjoy fee exemptions when applying with a Global Entry, Nexus, or SENTRI-enrolled parent or guardian, streamlining the process for family travelers.

While the enhanced fee may influence some, it's worth noting that several travel credit cards offer reimbursement for Global Entry or TSA PreCheck fees, easing the financial burden. It remains to be seen if these offerings will adjust to the new Global Entry fee.

Global Entry membership not only facilitates quicker re-entry to the U.S. but also includes TSA PreCheck, offering expedited security screening at numerous airports. Despite the adjustment in Global Entry fees, TSA PreCheck maintains its reduced price, offering another layer of convenience to travelers.

As the landscape of travel evolves, such updates underscore the importance of staying informed and prepared for your international adventures. Whether you're renewing your membership or considering enrollment, these changes are designed to enhance the travel experience for every participant in the Trusted Traveler Programs.
