A Weekend at Cataloochee Ranch: Laid-Back Luxury in the Smokies
Perched on a mountaintop in the Smokies, Cataloochee Ranch is where rustic charm meets refined comfort. This iconic Relais & Châteaux property delivers the best of both worlds: immersive ranch-style adventure and elevated mountain hospitality.
Founded nearly 100 years ago by the Alexander family, Cataloochee Ranch has long served as a beloved high-country escape. The ranch spans hundreds of scenic acres along the southeastern border of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, offering dramatic elevation, sweeping vistas, and open balds that make you feel worlds away from everyday life.
Whether you crave the thrill of a horseback ride, the serenity of a spa day, or the joy of gathering around a firepit, Cataloochee offers thoughtfully curated experiences for every kind of traveler.
My Stay: A Drivable Luxury Getaway Worth Sharing
From the moment we pulled onto the property, we were immersed in mountain magic. The crisp air, panoramic views, and peaceful energy set the tone instantly. We were warmly welcomed by the Cataloochee team, who made us feel like treasured guests from the very start.
After checking in, we explored the Mercantile (their take on a gift shop—think artisan finds and even a custom hat-making bar). Everyone on the property was incredibly kind and engaging, helping us settle into a weekend that felt indulgent yet totally unpretentious.
Standout Moments from the Weekend:
UTV Tour with Garrett: A guided ride across the ranch grounds that delivered unforgettable views, plenty of laughter and an educational insight to the history of the the ranch.
Picnic BBQ at The Swag: A short hike led us to Gooseberry Knob at The Swag (the neighboring sister property), where we enjoyed an alfresco lunch of bison burgers and endless sides—all with panoramic mountain views.
Wine Tasting with the Sommelier: A curated tasting that introduced us to unique wines in an intimate, relaxed setting.
S'mores by the Firepit: After dinner, we gathered under the stars for s'mores and stories around one of the many cozy fire pits.
Sunday Brunch: A slow, delicious wrap-up to the weekend—complete with mountain views and farm-fresh flavors.
What I Can’t Wait to Try Next Time:
There’s so much more to do here, and I’m already dreaming about my return. Next time, I plan to experience:
