Namibia: Two Weeks of Untamed Beauty and Adventure
Namibia is a land of endless horizons, dramatic landscapes, and unforgettable wildlife encounters. My recent two-week journey through this captivating country was nothing short of extraordinary. From the pristine Namib Desert to the wildlife-rich plains of Etosha, Namibia offers a blend of tranquility, adventure, and natural beauty that will leave you longing for more.
Starting our Journey
Before heading into the vast Namib Desert, we eased into our adventure with a stay at Omaanda, nestled within the stunning Zannier Reserve. This luxurious lodge, designed with individual Owambo-style clay and thatch huts, offers a tranquil introduction to Namibia’s wilderness.
Our first evening set the tone for the incredible experiences to come. We embarked on a game drive, where we caught our first glimpses of Namibia’s iconic wildlife. As the day drew to a close, we found ourselves immersed in a breathtaking sunset. Sundowners in hand, we watched as the golden light bathed the landscape, casting long shadows over the reserve and filling the sky with fire. It was the perfect way to kick off our Namibian adventure.
Southern Namib Desert: A Symphony of Color and Adventure
We made our way to the southern part of the Namib Desert, one of the most pristine and breathtaking landscapes I’ve ever encountered. The Namib Desert is a land of profound tranquility, extraordinary light, and endless adventure. Quad biking across the dunes, desert drives, soaring above in a hot air balloon, and star gazing under an infinite sky were just a few highlights of this region.
Sossusvlei stole my heart. Known for its towering red dunes and stark beauty, it’s a photographer’s paradise. Early morning light painted the sand in shades of gold and amber, casting dramatic shadows on the dunes. A short hike led us to Deadvlei, a surreal scene of ancient, darkened camelthorn trees scattered across a cracked white pan—like something out of a dream.
Midday heat can be intense here, so plan your explorations early or late in the day. On our way back, we stopped at the iconic Dune 45, a striking formation beloved for its perfect symmetry and glowing colors.
In this region, I stayed at two exceptional lodges: &Beyond’s Sossusvlei Desert Lodge and Kwessi Lodge. Each offered a unique experience—one luxurious and contemporary, the other rustic and intimate—both deeply connected to the desert.
Flying Over the Skeleton Coast
Next, we hopped on a small Cessna plane for a flight over the eerie beauty of the Skeleton Coast. Below us, shipwrecks dotted the shores, telling tales of past misfortune. Thousands of seals gathered along the coastline, and flamingos graced the lagoons with splashes of pink. Seeing the Skeleton Coast from above offered a perspective of Namibia’s raw and untamed allure that left me in awe.
Swakopmund: A Coastal Pause
We touched down in Swakopmund for a brief stopover to meet our guide for the next leg of the journey. This charming coastal town is a delightful blend of German heritage and African flair, offering unique dining, boutique shops, and a sense of timelessness.
Damaraland: Rugged Beauty and Ancient History
Damaraland introduced us to vast khaki plains, rugged mountains, and incredible desert-adapted wildlife. Staying at Mowani Mountain Camp, tucked among massive granite boulders, was an unforgettable experience.
Explorations included visits to Burnt Mountain, the Organ Pipes, and the 280-million-year-old Petrified Forest. A standout was Twyfelfontein, home to Southern Africa’s finest collection of prehistoric rock art and engravings.
One of the most fascinating encounters was with the desert elephants. These majestic giants have adapted to the harsh terrain, feeding on mopane and acacia trees and detecting water sources hidden beneath the ground. Watching them navigate the arid landscape was an exciting experience.
Etosha: The Safari of Dreams
Our final destination was Etosha, a wildlife haven where we split our stay between two exceptional properties.
At Ongava Tented Camp, the experience was nothing short of extraordinary. Staying in a tented camp meant we were deeply immersed in the wild, with the sounds and sights of nature all around us. At night, we could hear the distant (and sometimes not-so-distant) roars of lions and the rustle of wildlife passing by our tents. Waking up to elephants at the waterhole just in front of the tents and the main lodge was surreal—a once-in-a-lifetime moment that felt like stepping into a scene from a wildlife documentary.
Our last stop was Onguma The Fort, located on the private Onguma Reserve. This reserve boasts diverse ecosystems, from savannahs to woodlands, supporting a rich array of wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, and over 300 bird species.
One of the key takeaways from this region was the importance of lodge choice. While the public areas of Etosha National Park offer incredible wildlife, the private reserves provide a more intimate and authentic experience—far removed from the crowds of vehicles vying for a glimpse of a pride of lions.
